Texas Bioneers is designed to share practical innovations, sustainable practices, and success stories that have specific relevance to the issues and concerns of Texans. Texas Bioneers designs its own local program, bringing in plenary speakers with regional appeal, including business leaders, scientists, educators, and government officials. In addition, Texas Bioneers events create opportunities for dialog and interactions among the attendees around topics of shared interest, such as sustainable business practices, preservation of green spaces, local food and farming, urban living, holistic education, and the role of local government in supporting sustainable cities.

Texas Bioneers events change every year to respond to local interests and concerns. The program ranges from science to spirit – local to global – academia to the grass roots – farm to city – business to public service – art to engineering.

Greetings,

As mayor of Houston, I welcome all participants to the Texas Bioneers Fall Harvest Day here in Houston at Discovery Green Park on November 14, 2009, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.

This is an especially exciting year for Houston as we embrace a more energy-efficient, sustainable future. As a city, we are leading the way in energy-efficient construction through more stringent building codes and innovative retrofit programs. The City of Houston is recognized by the EPA as the No. 1 municipality for procuring renewable power through our recent upgrade to 50 megawatts of Texas wind energy to supply 32% of City facility and public infrastructure requirements. We are also aggressively changing our fleets to fuel-efficient, hybrid vehicles, posting our fleet as third largest in the country. These are exciting times.

The Bioneers’ mission of promoting innovative environmental and social solutions to make our world a better place is a noble one. Houstonians have the opportunity to hear and learn from leading experts about what all of us can do to strengthen our community and make our world a better place, as well as register to experience a “slow food” picnic dinner that evening.
