A message from City of Houston Mayor Annise Parker about the Texas Bioneers Fall Harvest Day in 2010:
Greetings,
As Mayor of Houston, I welcome all participants to the Texas Bioneers Fall Harvest Day in the Park at Discovery Green on November 6, 2010.
The City of Houston is striving to be the greenest City in the nation. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently recognized the City of Houston as the largest municipal purchaser of renewable energy in the nation.
The City of Houston is a leader in LEED™ buildings. Currently we are eighth in the nation in the number of LEED™ certified buildings and sixth in the nation in the number of Energy Start buildings. Our goal is to be #1. We will get there with the recent launch of the Houston Green Office Challenge for property managers/owners and tenants. Sign up to participate today at www.houstongoc.org.
We are a leader in energy efficiency. The City of Houston has led in weatherization through our Residential Energy Efficiency Program (REEP). We are spending $23 million to help thousands of Houston residents reduce their energy usage and their energy bill. Check out our program at www.reephouston.net.
Also, the City of Houston is leading the way for expanded local food production, building vegetable container gardens and a City Hall Victory Garden downtown, as well as launching the first ever weekly City Hall Farmers Market.
The Bioneers' mission of promoting innovative environmental and social solutions to make our world a better place is a noble one. Houstonians have the opportunity to hear and learn from leading experts about what all of us can do to strengthen our community and make our world a better place.
I hope your experience is enjoyable, educational and inspirational. Best wishes for a memorable and rewarding festival.
Sincerely,
Annise D. Parker
Mayor
