Docent Volunteers
Ready to give more? Docents are the storytellers of Blackwood. With training and a regular time commitment, they guide visitors through the farm, from the straw bale house to the gardens and the kitchen, sharing how it all works. It is the natural next step for volunteers who want to know the land inside and out.
What is a docent?
Docents are trained, volunteer educators who guide visitors through Blackwood. Their role is to facilitate learning, tell stories, and bring nature to life for diverse audiences, including adults and children.
Who can become a docent?
Anyone over the age of 18 years old can apply to be a docent volunteer.
What if I want to drop in as a volunteer?
If you’re looking to drop in as a volunteer check out our weekly volunteer opportunities. Docents require approval and training with a dedicated time commitment. Volunteering is a great way to get involved with Blackwood.
How will I know when I’ve been accepted?
You will hear from a member of our team that your application has been accepted.
What are the expectations to be a volunteer docent?
- Attend one docent training (offered twice a year; spring or fall) - this is required before you can begin
- Attend three open volunteer days per year (offered weekly Sept-May)
- Give at least one tour a year at Blackwood (the group will be organized through Blackwood staff)
- Volunteer at Blackwood’s non profit booth at one of our farmers market once per year
- Attend special trainings or events at your availability
How to Become a Docent
- Complete and submit a volunteer docent application.
- Interview with a Blackwood Team Member. (This will be scheduled once your application has been reviewed.)
- Pass a background check.
- Complete volunteer docent training.*
- Lead a mock tour around Blackwood.
* Volunteer docent training happens two times per year. We offer spring and fall training at Blackwood Educational Land Institute, 27144 Rock Island Road, Hempstead, TX 77445.
